Hybrid Iron History
The modern hybrid actually looks strikingly similar to a 5 wood. The head design is slighlty different in a few ways. A five wood usually has a larger clubhead area than a hybrid and the center of gravity is not usually as low. The few differences are what makes a hybrid much easier to hit.
The Taylor Made Golf Company is responsible for making the hybrid design popular when it first introduced it's "Rescue" line of hybrid clubs. Professional golfers were a little bit slow to adopt the club while amatuers and high handicappers started using them almost immediately.
Today hybrids come in all shapes and sizes. You can see 4 different styles of hybrids in the picture above. Some feature a crescent design, while others are more traditional, and some of the latest designs feature other head shapes including a square shape.
