The proper length backswing

Hit more consistent shots with a better backswing

How far you swing the club back will have a large effect on how well you strike the golf ball. Take it back too far and you will lose control of the clubhead. Too short and you won't achieve optimum power in your swing.

As we age we lose flexibility, so our swings will naturally become a little bit shorter. This doesn't mean you have to sacrifice a large amount of distance or control in your golf shots.

So how far back should your backswing be? Try to keep the club in front of your chest for as long as you can. When you can't do that anymore let your wrists cock and your right arm fold to a 90 degree angle. This is as far as you have to go to hit quality golf shots. For some the club will be parallel with the ground at the top of the swing, others will look like they are hitting half-power shots. Either way you'll be able to deliver a powerful and consistent strike from this position.

Remember, it's not important how long your backswing is, just that it is in control and is performed to the maximum of your flexibility and natural abilities.
